JULY 1999

"Say, are you really my Dad?"
.
Left: With Mum at home.

Right: Not exactly a keen football supporter as yet. And the way Carlton has been playing, I can't blame him.

JUNE 1999
He is gurling away and should be reciting Shakespeare in a week!!! Had his first go at solid food - well, mushy pumpkin anyway, and some of it stayed in his mouth.

Sam's Dad's best friend Phil Cherici surprised us all when he and wife Lorraine announced that son Anton was on the way. Phil and Lorraine were delighted when baby Sam arrived. When Dad and Phil were travelling the world back in the eighties, neither could have contemplated that one day they would be holding each other's sons in their arms and settling down to domestic bliss. They miss travelling to exotic places to dive, but nothing surpasses the pleasure of holding their son's in their arms.
Sam's third cousin David Stephens and his charming wife Vicki have nine wonderful children of their own.

MAY 1999
Sam is now smiling readily and thoroughly enjoying himself. He is sleeping right through the night, much to his parent's delight, and is a delightful baby.
On 21 May he was being supported on Mum's chest whilst lying down, when suddenly he rose up by himself and stood on his own with just a steady hand from Mum.

On 30 April, Sam became an Uncle.
Baby Sienna was born to big sister Catherine in Perth. Both sister and neice are doing fine.

APRIL 1999
Sam moved into his new house in the country, about ten minutes out of Yarram township, on 24 April. Here, he will be able to grow up and enjoy country living in a wonderful environment. The home is on two acres in a beautiful valley, surrounded by paddocks, and borders a creek on one side - Stoney Creek would you believe.

The day we moved in.

(We would like to make it clear that we do not own a purple car. We have some pride, you know!)
MARCH 1999. Sam is doing exceptionally well and is growing strongly. He has been back to the paediatrician in Traralgon for a check-up and it looks as though his hospital days are over. He is an exceptional baby, and absolutely no trouble at all. He sleeps well, feeds well at three to five hour intervals, and has not cried for more than a few seconds at a time. He has been introduced to Rotary, and has had his first social visit out with mother, to see Brooke and baby Jake, at Robertsons Beach. He is a hit in the Federal Coffee Palace Restaurant downstairs, and has had heaps of visitors at home. Needless to say, we are so proud of him.

Of course, it was necessary to meets the folks at home.

A great grin for Christa Whitaker
from Port Albert.

Sam's Zeo (uncle) Paolo, masta pasta andd pizza maker.

Right: With our dear friend
Wyn Norman, in the restaurant.

Two little cherubs!!

How come these guys are
always asleep.

Years ago Wendy promised herself that
should a truly great occasion occur, she
would celebrate with a bottle of
Dom Perignon. She met Peter and that warranted a gin and tonic !! But the arrival of Sam - now that's an occasion to warrant the best. And that explains why
the renovations in the lounge havn't
been completed.

Sam certainly went home in style. He slept for the fifty minute drive from Traralgon to Yarram. We managed to fit his car seat in the back of the Merc, but a two-door sports car is not the best vehicle for transporting a baby. So, the Merc is on the market. Want to buy a 1976 classic Mercedes 450 SLC ?
Sam was discharged from Latrobe Regional Hpsital at Traralgon on 4 March 1999, after a stay of eleven nights. It had a been a long haul for the little fellow, but he was now looking great. Wendy still had a problem with her coccyx which had a microfracture, but she was braving it out.
Back home, the first thing we had to do was to introduce Sam to Gracie, our boxer-kelpie cross. Gracie was curious, and confused at first, but I am sure they will become great pals.
Tristan, our dear friend and proprietor of the restaurant in our building was the first to welcome Sam home. It was an hour before Sam made it upstairs, as everyone in the restaurant wanted to meet him - and his parents were desperate for a great cappcuccino.Sam's first meal at home was a cafe latte - just a smidgen of froth of course.

SAM
Sam, 15 hours old.

(3458 g).

Proud parents Wendy and Peter, with Sam.
Sam was delivered by Dr Robin Widdowson, with Dr Katrina Leesong and Midwife Caroline Edwards assisting.

Postnatal care:
Dr Charmari Kappagoda (paediatrician).
Midwives Rosemary Parker, Debra Hewitson, Lin Newman, Angela Scully, Sue Bass, Carolyn Grasby.
Anthea Vandenberg (physio).

                                  Right: Jaundice treatment.

Sam had a rough trot for the eleven days he was in hospital. He contracted a virus which required seven days of antibiotics, had hypoglycemia, and jaundice. But he was always in good hands, with the staff at Latrobe Regional demonstrating an exceptional level of care, skill and professional attitude. By the time he was released, he was well on the way to being a lively young man.

Such a proud mother.

Sam's first introduction to his Uncle Greg, Wendy's wonderful brother.
